Virgin Holidays

Brief

Virgin Holidays was launched in July 2006. We were brought on to develop a strong affiliate program, building close relationships between the brand and their affiliates and to provide a high quality service with increased transparency.

Objectives

  • Strategic planning with all Virgin Holidays marketing partners to ensure that all involved act as one marketing team delivering a consistent message.
  • Ensure that other marketing activities are coordinated with affiliate activity.
  • Achieve affiliate sales targets and optimise its Return on Investment.

Delivery

To achieve their overall marketing objectives Virgin Holidays set up a quarterly web strategy team meeting, involving all online marketing parties including the search agency, affiliate networks, the creative agency, the brand agency, the site usability agency as well as Virgin Holidays internal marketing, web and technical teams. The aim of these quarterly meetings is to share best practice, review performance and discuss plans for the next quarter.

By bringing together all parties each quarter, Virgin Holidays maximise the coherence of their advertising across channels, coordinating their marketing activities to build and maintain brand awareness with a consistent message. The meetings also enable each party to share results and analyse marketing activities, ensuring that Virgin Holidays allocate their marketing budget to the most cost-efficient marketing channels and optimising their marketing ROI as a result.

The collaboration encourages healthy competition between all parties involved to achieve set targets and maximise results of their individual marketing channels. It also enables all parties to discuss new marketing concepts and to create solutions or creative tools to address their message and sell their products.

Virgin Holidays also worked to integrate their on- and offline marketing activity. In January 2009, for example, when they carried out heavy promotional campaigns in the London Underground and in the daily Metro newspaper, affiliates were offered similar promotions, thus increasing customer awareness online and likelihood to purchase.

Results

  • 30% year on year increase in commission from 2008 to 2009 and over 70%  year on year increase in Q1 2009 alone.

Conclusion

Virgin Holidays have been innovative in their implementation of regular web strategy meetings to achieve an integrated marketing strategy, encouraging transparency and collaboration to obvious commercial benefit. They continue to focus on integration as well as their performance-driven affiliate marketing activities.
